Build **NEON ARENA**, a complete playable futuristic top-down 2D arena shooter. This must be a REAL GAME, not a prototype, mockup, landing page, or collection of decorative buttons.

The visual style should be premium cyberpunk: deep black/dark-purple background, neon cyan/purple/magenta gradients, glowing borders, futuristic HUD, animated grid, particles, energy effects, smooth transitions, and polished game-like UI. Keep gameplay readable; visual effects must never hide enemies, bullets, or the player.

CORE GAMEPLAY:
The player controls a futuristic neon combat drone inside an enclosed arena. Enemies continuously spawn in waves. Move, aim, shoot, dodge, collect XP/energy/credits, level up, select upgrades, unlock weapons, defeat elite enemies and bosses, and eventually clear the final arena.

DESKTOP CONTROLS:
WASD / Arrow Keys = movement.
Mouse = aim.
Left Mouse = shoot.
Space = dash.
Q = special ability.
ESC = pause.

MOBILE CONTROLS:
Add a responsive virtual movement joystick at the bottom-left and an aiming/shooting joystick or touch control at the bottom-right. The movement joystick must smoothly control player direction and magnitude. When released, it must immediately return to center and stop movement input. Controls must not cause page scrolling.

PLAYER:
Create a glowing futuristic combat drone with a visible energy core and directional weapon. Implement real movement, aiming, health, damage, collision, dash, energy, cooldowns and death. Keep the player inside arena boundaries.

COMBAT:
Implement real projectiles, collision detection, damage, fire rates, projectile lifetime, hit effects, critical hits and enemy death effects. Add muzzle flashes, projectile trails, impact particles and subtle screen shake. Use object cleanup/pooling where useful for performance.

WEAPONS:
Create multiple genuinely different weapons:

1. NEON PULSE — balanced automatic energy weapon.
2. VOID BLASTER — slow, powerful projectile.
3. ARC CANNON — electricity chains between nearby enemies.
4. PLASMA BURST — rapid multi-shot weapon.
5. NOVA SHOTGUN — multiple close-range projectiles.
6. PHOTON RAIL — chargeable high-damage shot.
7. SINGULARITY — creates a gravity field that pulls enemies.

Each weapon must have real statistics such as damage, fire rate, projectile speed, spread, projectile count, range and special effects.

ENEMIES:
Implement real enemy AI and collision.

DRONE — basic enemy that follows the player.
CHASER — fast aggressive enemy.
SHOOTER — maintains distance and fires projectiles.
TANK — slow, large, high-health enemy.
DASHER — telegraphs then rapidly charges.
SPLITTER — divides into smaller enemies on death.
SNIPER — targets the player with a visible warning line before firing.
ELITE — stronger enemy with special modifiers.

Enemies must have actual health, movement, attacks, damage, death effects, XP and rewards.

WAVE SYSTEM:
Create progressively harder waves.

Wave 1 should teach the player the basics.
Later waves introduce new enemies and larger groups.
Every few waves include elite enemies.
Eventually trigger a boss fight.

Display:
WAVE NUMBER
ENEMIES REMAINING
SCORE
HEALTH
ENERGY
WEAPON
AMMO/ENERGY
ABILITY COOLDOWN

Do not spawn enemies directly on top of the player.

BOSSES:
Create at least three unique bosses:

THE OVERSEER — projectile patterns, lasers and enemy summons.
VOID TITAN — charges, shockwaves and shields.
NEON CORE — final boss with multiple phases, increasingly complex attacks and arena hazards.

Bosses must have unique mechanics, attack telegraphs, large health bars, phase transitions and meaningful rewards. Do NOT simply make a normal enemy with huge health.

PROGRESSION:
Implement XP and leveling.

When the player levels up, temporarily pause combat and show 3 upgrade choices.

Possible upgrades:
+Damage
+Fire Rate
+Movement Speed
+Maximum Health
+Energy
+Energy Regeneration
+Critical Chance
+Critical Damage
+Projectile Count
+Projectile Speed
+Pickup Range
-Dash Cooldown
-Ability Cooldown

Upgrades must actually affect gameplay and stack sensibly.

PICKUPS:
Enemies can drop:
XP CORES
HEALTH CELLS
ENERGY CELLS
NEON CREDITS
WEAPON SHARDS

Give pickups glowing visuals and collection effects.

DASH:
Implement a real dash with rapid movement, short invulnerability, cooldown and neon trail. The player should be able to use it to escape enemies and attacks.

ABILITIES:
Add several functional abilities such as:
NOVA BLAST — area damage.
TEMPORAL FREEZE — slows enemies.
ENERGY BARRIER — temporary protection.
CHAIN LIGHTNING — attacks multiple enemies.
GRAVITY WELL — pulls enemies together.

Each ability must have energy usage or cooldown and visible feedback.

COMBO:
Create a combo system. Rapid kills increase the multiplier. Higher combos can increase score and rewards. Taking damage should reduce the combo.

ARENAS:
Include multiple visual arenas:
NEON GRID
VOID STATION
CYBER CITY
ENERGY CORE

Each should have different backgrounds/effects while keeping gameplay readable.

MENUS:
Create a polished main menu with:

NEON ARENA logo
PLAY
ARMORY
UPGRADES
HOW TO PLAY
STATISTICS
SETTINGS

Every button must work.

ARMORY:
Allow the player to view and equip unlocked weapons and cosmetic skins. Store unlocks locally.

SETTINGS:
Include:
Master Volume
Music Volume
SFX Volume
Graphics Quality
Screen Shake
Reduced Motion
Control Sensitivity
Mobile Joystick Size

Save settings using localStorage.

GAME STATES:

SAVE SYSTEM:
Use localStorage for:
High Score
Highest Wave
Credits
Unlocked Weapons
Cosmetics
Achievements
Statistics
Settings

The game must still work without login, signup, email, phone number, backend or external account.

HUD:
Create a futuristic neon HUD that integrates naturally with the game. Use translucent panels, subtle glowing borders, readable typography and animated status bars.

VISUAL EFFECTS:
Implement:
Neon projectile trails
Enemy death particles
Hit flashes
Damage numbers
Dash trails
Explosion effects
Pickup effects
Level-up animation
Boss entrance
Boss phase transitions
Victory animation
Subtle screen shake

Keep effects optimized.

PERFORMANCE:
Use HTML5 Canvas and requestAnimationFrame. Use delta time so gameplay speed is consistent across different FPS. Remove destroyed entities. Prevent unlimited particles/projectiles. Avoid memory leaks and duplicate game loops.

RESPONSIVE DESIGN:
Desktop, tablet and mobile must all be playable. The game must resize correctly and never produce a blank screen. Mobile controls must be touch-friendly.

IMPORTANT:
Do not create fake buttons.
Do not create fake enemies.
Do not create fake health bars.
Do not create placeholder gameplay.
Do not stop after making the UI.
Do not leave core features as TODOs.
Do not require external services for the game to function.

BUILD ORDER:

1. Game engine and Canvas.
2. Player movement and aiming.
3. Shooting and collisions.
4. Enemy AI.
5. Waves.
6. Health/damage.
7. XP/upgrades.
8. Weapons.
9. Abilities.
10. Bosses.
11. Menus/HUD.
12. Save system.
13. Mobile controls.
14. Visual/audio polish.
15. Testing and optimization.

Before finishing, test the complete loop:

START GAME → MOVE → AIM → SHOOT → KILL ENEMIES → COLLECT XP → LEVEL UP → CHOOSE UPGRADE → SURVIVE WAVES → FIGHT ELITE → FIGHT BOSS → WIN/LOSE → RESTART.

Fix all syntax errors, broken buttons, missing references, console errors and gameplay bugs before delivering.

The final result must feel like a polished indie browser game: fast, responsive, futuristic, replayable and genuinely playable.

**NEON ARENA must be a GAME, not a website pretending to be one.**
